Headquarters Internship Programme

AUC provides opportunities for students enrolled in a graduate programme to undertake an Internship at its Headquarters in Addis Ababa. What are the various employment profiles of our staff

AUC recruits staff on fixed-term, temporary basis or on a regular basis as when the need arises. Staff are grouped into two broad categories, Professional and General Service staff categories.


  1. Elected Officials (Group 1)

  2. Professional Staff (Group II)

  3. This category constitutes staff members responsible, among other things, for conceiving, planning, managing, supervising, monitoring, drafting and evaluating departmental activities. africanunionphoto These comprise of technical staff who are responsible for, among other things, developing, implementing and supervising programme activities and staff members with specialized functions, such as revising, translating, interpreting, proof-reading, précis-writing and evaluating materials.

  2. General Service Staff (Group IV)

    • The General Service Staff category comprises of two groups

    • First Category (GSA)

    • Administrative, Clerical, Maintenance and Paramedical.

    • Second Category (GSB)

    • An Auxiliary to the first category and includes general service staff members responsible among other things for performing routine duties of maintenance.

What are the various types of appointments that we offer

  1. Regular Appointments
  2. These are appointments made in the first instance on a fixed-term contract for a period of three (3) years, the first twelve (12) months of which shall be considered probationary period and thereafter for renewable periods every two years subject to performance.

  3. Continuing Regular Appointments
  4. These are appointments made by the Organization to Staff Members who have satisfactorily completed five (5) years of service as Regular Staff. The Organization shall ensure that the number of Continuing Staff Members shall not exceed fifty-one percent (51%) of the total number of regular staff of the Organization for each staff category taking into account the Staff Member country quotas.

  5. Fixed-term Appointments
  6. These are appointments made for a period not exceeding two years but not less than a year with terms and conditions of service specified in their contracts in accordance with AU Polity on recruitment.

  7. Short-term Appointment
  8. These are appointments made for a period not exceeding one year but less than three (3) months with terms and conditions of service specified in the contract in accordance with AU Policy on recruitment.

  9. Consultancy
  10. These are contracts for a period not exceeding three (3) months with terms and conditions of service specified in the contracts in accordance with AU Policy on recruitment. africanunionphoto

  11. Special Services Appointment
  12. These are contracts of a limited duration and are renewable as and when necessary but not conferring on a staff member any full time commitment during its duration. The terms and conditions of service specified in the contracts in accordance with AU Policy on recruitment.

  13. Political and Special Appointments
  14. These are appointments made by Elected Officials for a duration not exceeding their term of office. The Political Appointee shall possess adequate knowledge of the working of the Union.

  15. General Service Categories
    • First Category (GSA), these include Administrative, clerical, maintenance and paramedical staff.

    • Second Category (GSB),This is an auxiliary to the First category. They are responsible for performing routine duties of maintenance.

How do I apply

You are strongly encouraged to apply only to an advertised vacancy notice for which you consider you are qualified and ensure you send the application before the deadline. Upon completion of the personal history form, online applications will be acknowledged via e-mail. To start the online application process, applicants are required to register online for a personal account. After opening the account, applicants may apply for vacancies using the AUC personal history form provided. africanunionphotoafricanunionphoto Once the personal history form has been completed for a particular vacancy, it can be saved and used for future applications. The personal history form may be modified as necessary for future applications.

Please check your qualifications against the requirements displayed in the position description since only those applicants that meet the requirements will be considered. The Commission requests all applicants from AU Member States to always apply whenever their exists vacancies that they believe they are qualified for.

Qn: What does registering and creating a profile on AUC e-Recruitment system allow me to do ?


By creating an online profile in our E-recruitment system you wil be able to

  1. Create your own personal account for future visits.

  2. Return to view and update your personal history form at any time.

  3. Apply to more than one vacancy notice.

  4. Monitor the status of vacancy notices for which you have applied.

  5. Receive e-mail correspondence (notifications) about vacancy notices for which you have applied.

Receipt of online applications will be confirmed via the email address you have provided. The email is not official confirmation of your application, only the vacancy appearing in your list of applications is proof and confirmation.

Qn: How do I create an a account ?

  2. Click Register here.

  3. Enter all the required information, note use your personal E-mail address for which you have access to since any system generated E-mails will be sent to this E-mail.

  4. Choose a good Username and Password that you can easily remember.

  5. Confirm that you accept our data privacy statement by checking the Yes, I have read the data privacy statement and I accept it.

  6. Click Register button, if their are no errors an E-mail will be sent to you asking you to confirm your registration. Please click the link and your registration will be confirmed, you can then now procede in creating your profile.

Qn: How do I Make an application ?


  1. Access the E-recruitment application by using the username and password you created.

  3. Start your search, please do not change anything in the search criteria.

  4. Select the job you want to apply for.

  5. Complete the application wizard, note the cover letter and Questionaires are mandatory so please ensure that you provide them.

No you can use the same profile to apply for multiple positions. However note if you update the profile the lastest information you will be the one used to shortlist.

Qn: How do I reset my password ?


  1. From the logon page select Forgot password.

  2. Provide the E-mail you used to register and click Send Password

  3. Access your E-mail the password will be sent to you via E-mail, Copy and paste the new password you will then be prompted to provide the new password.

Qn: What is the maximum size of attachments that we can upload ?

  • The Organization accepts voluntary financial contributions if consistent with its aims and activities.

  • No. Being an Organization of sovereign states, its resources are allocated only to programmes which have been officially approved by its members. However, there are several ways Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) can collaborate with the AU on its activities.
